CENTCOM said at the direction of the US president, US forces have begun further strikes on Iranian targets to degrade Iran’s ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The statement said Iran recently carried out “unjustified attacks” on commercial vessels and civilian mariners in the waterway and that the US will hold those responsible accountable.

China’s National Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters raised flood and typhoon emergency response from level-4 to level-3 at 17:00 on July 9 for Zhejiang and Fujian as Typhoon Bavi approaches. At 14:00 on July 9 the meteorological agency placed Bavi’s center about 1,030 km east-southeast of Keelung, Taiwan in the northwest Pacific, with maximum winds near the center of 52 m/s and a 7-level wind radius of 500 km. Bavi is moving northwest at 10–15 km/h and may make landfall or pass northern Taiwan on July 11 daytime (super/strong typhoon), then is forecast to make coastal landfall between Fuqing (Fujian) and Wenling (Zhejiang) on the night of July 11 (strong typhoon/typhoon). Authorities said the storm’s landfall intensity, wide impact and destructive potential make the situation severe and complex; emergency response will be adjusted as the storm evolves.
