A modular Antarctic emergency accommodation unit co-developed by China State
Construction Eighth Engineering Bureau and the National Key Laboratory of Green
Building boarded the research icebreaker Xue Long 2 on the 7th for an Antarctic
deployment. The unit uses a square-steel frame, high-insulation envelope and
heated floors to maintain interior temperatures at 18–24°C and is rated to
withstand ambient temperatures down to −40°C. A self-developed thermal-break
adjustable ventilation valve prevents wind- and snow-driven ingress and
condensation while minimizing thermal conduction, enabling sustained passive
ventilation and insulation without power.
