Energy prices rose amid Middle East tensions, and a Friday survey showed German consumer confidence is set to slip to -30.6 in October from -26.8 in September, the weakest reading since May. Survey head Rolf Birkel said most households expect higher energy costs to erode purchasing power, leaving them more pessimistic about income over the next 12 months. Consumers' income expectations fell to their lowest since April, while reported willingness to save increased.

A senior Iranian official told Refinitiv that even if the US accepts Iran's plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Iran will not make concessions on its nuclear program and the strait will remain closed until the US meets "all conditions." Foreign Minister Araghchi earlier outlined a seven-day proposal that would require an end to hostilities in multiple regions, lifting of the US maritime blockade on Iranian ports, release of frozen assets and removal of oil sanctions in exchange for reopening the waterway.
