Argentine President MILEI said on the 23rd he will defend sovereignty over the Malvinas (Falkland Islands) "in a peaceful, pragmatic and effective manner." The government has taken a tougher line on the islands' sovereignty. In a nationwide televised address on the evening of the 3rd MILEI said his administration will increase sanctions on foreign companies extracting natural resources in the islands and adjacent disputed waters. Sanctions procedures have been opened against 60 foreign companies and individuals.
