S&P GLOBAL MARKET INTELLIGENCE economist Eleanor Dennison said Australia’s economy weakened at the end of Q3, with growth momentum continuing to fade in September. The quarter remained slightly expansionary, an improvement on a weak Q2. Business sentiment stays positive but confidence in the growth outlook has weakened amid layoffs, rising cost pressures, softer demand and renewed export weakness. Services remain the main growth driver but the rebound there has softened; manufacturing is weak, with activity and sentiment indices turning negative for the first time since March. Commodity producers report increased supply-chain pressure, though inflationary pressure has eased.

U.S. President Trump called Iran the world’s top state sponsor of terror and said the U.S. will never allow it to obtain nuclear weapons. He said he has repeatedly urged Iran to negotiate and, after saying he had “given Iran every opportunity to reach a deal,” claimed he then acted and “completely destroyed” Iran’s air force and navy. Trump said he faces a major decision on Iran and expects a U.S.-Iran agreement after the midterm elections, adding Iran is waiting for U.S. midterm results but he will not factor elections into Iran policy. He said the U.S. is expanding military sustainment capacity, that ammunition stockpiles far exceed expected usage, and that large ammunition factories will be opened, with 18 set to become operational. Major changes could occur quickly, he added. On energy, Trump said oil flows are at their highest levels since the conflict began and warned that if the Iran conflict ends, oil prices would fall sharply, potentially below pre-conflict levels.
