China’s National Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters raised flood and
typhoon emergency response from level-4 to level-3 at 17:00 on July 9 for
Zhejiang and Fujian as Typhoon Bavi approaches. At 14:00 on July 9 the
meteorological agency placed Bavi’s center about 1,030 km east-southeast of
Keelung, Taiwan in the northwest Pacific, with maximum winds near the center of
52 m/s and a 7-level wind radius of 500 km. Bavi is moving northwest at 10–15
km/h and may make landfall or pass northern Taiwan on July 11 daytime
(super/strong typhoon), then is forecast to make coastal landfall between Fuqing
(Fujian) and Wenling (Zhejiang) on the night of July 11 (strong
typhoon/typhoon). Authorities said the storm’s landfall intensity, wide impact
and destructive potential make the situation severe and complex; emergency
response will be adjusted as the storm evolves.
