On the afternoon of the 9th (local time), South Korea's Supreme Court sentenced
former President Yoon Suk-yeol to 7 years for obstructing an arrest. The court
found that after declaring emergency measures at the end of 2024, Yoon in early
2025 used the presidential security service to prevent the Corruption
Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) and other agencies from
executing an arrest. This is the Supreme Court's first final ruling among
several cases tied to the emergency-martial-law episode. Seoul Central District
Court handed a 5-year sentence at first instance in January 2026; the Seoul High
Court upheld a 7-year term on appeal in April 2026.
