WHO on July 2 said a Marburg virus infection was identified in Uganda after the Africa CDC on July 1 reported the Uganda Ministry of Health had notified one case. WHO described Marburg virus disease as a severe viral hemorrhagic fever with symptoms including high fever, headache, muscle pain, diarrhea, vomiting and bleeding. Studies indicate the virus’s natural reservoir is the Egyptian fruit bat; transmission to humans can occur and human-to-human spread is possible via direct contact and infected bodily fluids.
