A South China Sea tropical disturbance developed into a tropical depression on the morning of July 1, 2026. At 08:00 on July 1 it was centered about 1,020 km east‑southeast of Qionghai, Hainan (14.2°N, 118.5°E) with near‑center maximum winds of 15 m/s (force 7). It is forecast to move WNW at 20–25 km/h, intensify into a numbered typhoon on July 2, and approach Hainan’s eastern coast, potentially reaching strong tropical storm or typhoon strength. Hainan Provincial Meteorological Bureau issued a typhoon Level‑4 warning at 09:30 on July 1; the provincial disaster prevention and relief committee activated a Level‑4 flood and wind emergency response at 10:00 on July 1. Hainan is expected to experience strong winds and heavy rain from July 1–4, moving east to west across the island.
