In a televised address on the evening of the 26th, Israeli Prime Minister
Netanyahu said representatives of Israel, Lebanon and the US signed a
working-framework agreement in Washington. He said the Israel Defense Forces
will remain long-term in a southern Lebanon "security zone" until Hezbollah is
fully disarmed and no longer poses a threat to Israel. Netanyahu described the
accord as a major achievement and a heavy blow to Iran, saying Tehran had sought
to force an IDF withdrawal but Israel and the US have signaled that Iran,
Hezbollah and other armed groups have no foothold in Lebanese affairs.
