Former Japanese prime minister Yukio Hatoyama, chair of the East Asia Community
Research Institute, told the 21st Jeju Forum on June 25 that Prime Minister
Takaichi should immediately correct and apologise for remarks on Taiwan that he
said clearly violate the spirit of the 1972 Japan‑China Joint Communique.
Hatoyama said China’s anger was understandable and urged the Japanese government
to explicitly tell Beijing it will continue to abide by the communique, notably
by maintaining a stance of not supporting Taiwan independence.
