Reform Party leader Nigel Farage on July 22 called for a UK general election and
said he is prepared to push through radical change. Earlier, Prime Minister Keir
Starmer said outside 10 Downing Street he will resign as Labour leader but will
remain prime minister until a successor is chosen. Starmer has asked the Labour
National Executive Committee to set a leadership timetable; nominations open
July 9 and the contest will be completed before Parliament's summer recess.
Under UK rules, a change of governing party leader does not automatically
trigger a general election; if Labour retains a Commons majority, its new leader
would succeed as prime minister.
