Canadian officials are debating how to distribute the new 49,000-unit low-tariff
quota for Chinese-made EVs, including potential caps per manufacturer. The
system, effective March, initially allows 24,500 import permits through Aug. 31
on a first-come, first-served basis, while ensuring equitable access.
Discussions include giving priority to Chinese automakers with Canadian
operations and managing allocations to prevent dominance by any single company,
according to people familiar with the matter.
