Vietnam and Russia signed an agreement to build Vietnam’s first nuclear power
plant, Ninh Thuan 1, during Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s visit to Moscow.
The project will feature two Russian-designed reactors with a combined 2,400 MW
capacity, aimed to be operational by 2031. Russia’s LNG producer Novatek also
signed a preliminary deal to supply gas to Vietnam. The moves come as Vietnam
seeks energy security amid Iran war disruptions, diversifying crude imports and
accelerating renewable and nuclear energy development.
