India is considering requiring power plants to resume blending imported coal with domestic coal for the first time since 2024 to ease coal supply tightness and reduce upward pressure on electricity prices. Supply strains have pushed monthly spot power prices to their highest since 2022. Traders say imported coal costs are likely to rise further on stronger global demand and higher freight: Indonesian coal is up about 20% since May, Russian coal +14% and South African coal +19%.
