South Africa plans to invest up to 44 billion rand (about $2.7 bln) to upgrade
manganese export infrastructure, including building a manganese-export berth at
Ngqura Port and repairing rail links, Transnet said in pre-qualification
documents. Transnet intends to bring in private partners to build, fund and
operate the berth under a 25-year concession; roughly 20 billion rand (about
$1.2 bln) is earmarked for rail repairs to boost mine-to-port capacity. South
Africa holds around 70% of proven global manganese reserves; the project is
aimed at easing export bottlenecks and improving mineral transport efficiency.
