Thune said Trump’s strongest objections were aimed at the 'panic and noise' around AI, while acknowledging the technology poses real risks. Thune is pushing an AI safety bill that would require AI companies to reduce risks from frontier models and report major safety incidents; the bill, co-sponsored with Sen. Amy Klobuchar, is seeking additional Democratic backing. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has previously met with Thune to discuss AI safety.
