At the UN General Assembly, President Trump joked that on the way back from Iran the US could put Rubio aboard "a very big, beautiful aircraft carrier" and leave him in Cuba to "handle the rest," noting Rubio's Cuban heritage. He had threatened in May to dispatch the USS Abraham Lincoln to waters near Cuba after any US military action against Iran; this time he made no operational announcement. Trump called Cuba a "totally failed state" whose political system would "collapse," prompting the Cuban delegation to walk out, and said Rubio is involved in discussions with Cuba.

Iran foreign minister Araghchi, speaking during a UN General Assembly meeting with the Dutch foreign minister, accused European countries of double standards for remaining silent or condoning US and Israeli actions against Iran. He said Europe cannot profess support for rule of law and human rights while ignoring or supporting apparent military aggression toward Iran. Araghchi added Iran has acted responsibly on the nuclear file and pursued diplomacy to remove pretexts for US action, and blamed repeated US breaches of commitments and its bellicose policy for current insecurity in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
