The OECD said on Wednesday that AI-driven investment has modestly boosted global growth this year but a Middle East commodity-price shock is weighing on the 2027 outlook. After 3.4% growth last year, the OECD’s mid-term outlook projects global growth of 2.9% in 2026, slightly above its June forecast of 2.8%, and only 3.0% in 2027, below June’s 3.1% projection. Strong AI infrastructure spending — from data centers to semiconductors — has supported US growth and lifted tech exports from Japan and South Korea. The OECD flagged downside risks from energy-market volatility, a strong El Nifio, rising government bond yields and disappointing returns on AI investment; if realised, these could shave 0.7 percentage point off global growth and push global inflation up by 1.1 percentage point next year.
