Ali Akbar Velayati, foreign affairs adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, said on
July 8 on social media that Iran has warned the region is not a place for
political gambling and has repeatedly shown it will respond immediately to any
adventurous acts. Velayati blamed other parties for recent tensions, saying they
have publicly acknowledged scrapping a memorandum of understanding that had
itself been repeatedly breached, pushing the region toward a dangerous edge.
U.S. President Trump, speaking in Ankara on July 8, said he believes the
U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding "has ended," that he will inform U.S.
negotiators, and that he does not want to deal with Iran.
