A wildfire driven by extreme heat continues to spread in Portugal, with more than 10,000 hectares burned as of the 4th. Authorities have deployed about 1,100 firefighters, 380 fire engines and eight aircraft and helicopters. Portugal has requested assistance from the EU; Brussels said on the 3rd it will join the response. Spain has sent 118 firefighters and 45 fire vehicles to assist.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Galuzin said Europe is currently unlikely to present constructive ideas to mediate the Ukraine crisis. He said: "Recently European leaders have repeatedly invoked the need to 'dialogue' with Russia — ostensibly to resolve the Ukraine crisis — while at the same time calling for 'strategic strikes' against our country; this distorted logic makes it unlikely Europe will propose any constructive ideas."
