Micron has formally launched a 1.5 trillion yen (about $9.0 bln) expansion of
its western Japan memory-chip factory to produce advanced memory chips. The move
is part of Micron’s global capacity build to meet AI and autonomous-vehicle
demand; the Japanese government will provide up to 500 billion yen in subsidies
toward construction costs. The expansion is designed to improve energy
efficiency and data-transfer performance for AI services and self‑driving
systems, with new production lines expected to start shipping around summer
2028.
