Hong Kong's first trading day after the holiday opened strongly; the Hang Seng
rose about 200 pts at the open and briefly gained over 2% to a high of 23,335.92
before giving back most gains to close up 0.76% at 23,055.03. The Hang Seng Tech
Index fell 0.4% to 4,454.28. Turnover was HKD 369.63 bln, versus HKD 308.05 bln
on the prior session. Compute-hardware and semiconductor names led declines
following offshore moves, with several stocks down more than 10%. Autos, rare
earths and precious metals outperformed; innovative-drug names rallied again in
