June 30, 2026, Beijing — China foreign minister Wang Yi met UN secretary-general
candidate Maria Fernanda Espinosa, the former UN General Assembly president and
ex-Ecuador foreign minister. Wang said Espinosa’s candidacy reflects a
commitment to multilateralism and UN core values, and urged the UN to revitalize
and strengthen its capacity amid a complex international environment. He
reiterated China’s firm support for the UN and said President Xi’s four global
initiatives are practical steps to defend multilateralism and help the UN adapt
and grow.
