The U.S. government considers normalization between Israel and Syria before Israel’s parliamentary election in October to be very unlikely, the Jerusalem Post reported, citing sources. Damascus has demanded an Israeli troop pullback from the buffer zone; U.S. officials say Prime Minister Netanyahu is unlikely to authorize such a withdrawal before the vote, which they view as the main obstacle to progress.
