The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement in the early hours of
June 27 that, after Israel violated a ceasefire in southern Lebanon and hours
later the US, citing pretexts related to an unauthorized vessel transiting a
non‑authorized route in the Strait of Hormuz, launched airstrikes on Iran’s
coastal areas, IRGC naval forces struck US military positions in the region. The
statement invoked Article 5 of the US‑Iran memorandum of understanding, saying
Iran is responsible for passage management through the Strait of Hormuz and that
US attempts to breach that commitment "received the necessary response" and
"will be met with larger reprisals if aggression recurs."
