The UK grid operator warned of an anticipated 19 GW supply–demand shortfall and
has asked generators to release additional available capacity. Such notices are
used when the system requires a larger safety margin than current supply
provides. A continent-wide heatwave has heavily strained European grids;
peak-period power prices have surged regionwide and France has cut output at
some nuclear plants. The operator said in a Tuesday evening alert the measure is
to secure supply and does not indicate imminent blackouts.
