According to ongoing research on AI perspectives conducted by Gallup and Microsoft, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) can be presented in a "ladder" pattern, progressing from initial awareness to past use, and then to more frequent use. Across the 37 countries surveyed, the proportion of adults at each stage of this ladder typically decreases as usage deepens. While the median awareness of AI is 81%, the median percentage of those who have used AI (whether for work or personal purposes) is only 43%, and the proportion of frequent users is even lower. The level of AI adoption also varies significantly across countries. In Singapore, 96% of adults are aware of AI, 79% have used it, and 46% use it daily. In Malawi, however, only 12% of adults are aware of AI, 3% have used it, and 1% use it daily. This contrast highlights how the level of AI adoption can be drastically different outside of highly interconnected, technology-centric environments.
