The OECD said on Wednesday that AI-driven investment has modestly boosted global growth this year but a Middle East commodity-price shock is weighing on the 2027 outlook. After 3.4% growth last year, the OECD’s mid-term outlook projects global growth of 2.9% in 2026, slightly above its June forecast of 2.8%, and only 3.0% in 2027, below June’s 3.1% projection. Strong AI infrastructure spending — from data centers to semiconductors — has supported US growth and lifted tech exports from Japan and South Korea. The OECD flagged downside risks from energy-market volatility, a strong El Nifio, rising government bond yields and disappointing returns on AI investment; if realized, these could shave 0.7 percentage point off global growth and push global inflation up by 1.1 percentage point next year.

The OECD said the Bank of England can hold its policy rate at 3.75% until late 2027 and cut 25bp in Q3 next year, arguing policy is already sufficiently tight to restrain inflation. It warned the energy crisis is adding to global price pressures. The view contrasts with forecasts for the Fed, ECB and Bank of Japan to tighten further in coming months. BoE Governor BAILEY this month warned households and firms that policy may have to tighten and projected inflation above 4% next year. Markets currently price four 25bp BoE hikes by end of next year. OECD chief economist Scarpetta said the UK’s starting point differs from other countries, noting the key rate is high enough to curb inflation and that UK inflation has run below OECD forecasts this year.
