The Italian government will meet domestic refiners on Oct 8 to discuss raising
refinery output as surging diesel and fuel prices heighten inflation concerns.
Diesel markets are highly tight after a sharp fall in European fuel imports and
years of declining regional refining capacity; markets worry US supply could
drop further and reductions from the Middle East and Russia have trimmed
available resources. Italy has extended diesel tax relief through early October
to help lower consumer costs.
