Independent macro research firm Kobeissi Letter, citing Goldman Sachs, reports that high-market-cap mutual funds are currently allocating approximately 1.75 percentage points less to AI-related stocks than their benchmark index, marking the largest underweighting in history. This statistic excludes some mega-cap tech stocks, including Amazon, Broadcom, Alphabet (Google's parent company), Meta, Microsoft, and Nvidia. In contrast, in mid-2024, large mutual funds were allocating 0.40 percentage points more to AI-related stocks than their benchmark. Currently, as institutions reduce their AI stock allocations, AI-related stocks account for an average of approximately 13.0% of large mutual fund portfolios, lower than the 14.8% in their benchmark portfolios. For comparison, both ratios were approximately 6.5% in the third quarter of 2024. This indicates that institutional portfolios are currently under-allocated to artificial intelligence trading.
