As the music industry grapples with the transformative impact of AI, a coalition of record labels and artists is urging streaming platforms to add labels to AI-generated music. The coalition plans to partner with platforms like Spotify and Apple Music to indicate whether AI technology was used in the music production process. Currently, the use of AI is primarily self-labeled by artists, record labels, and distributors. Led by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the coalition proposes two distinct labels for AI content. One label would identify tracks entirely generated by AI based on prompts, or tracks where lead vocals or key instrumental parts are generated by AI. The other label would identify “AI-assisted” tracks—works primarily created by humans but incorporating AI technology in certain elements.
