Tanzania’s central bank has purchased roughly 28 metric tons of gold for reserves over the past 18 months, valued at about $3.68 billion at current prices, Governor Emmanuel Tutuba said. The buying program began around 2023. In September 2024 the country’s mining regulator ordered gold exporters, miners and traders to sell at least 20% of exportable gold to the central bank.
