Michael Nizad, head of multi-asset and portfolio management at Edmond de Rothschild Asset Management, said the yen's current weakness is excessive and fails to reflect the strong fundamentals of the Japanese economy; this misalignment could prompt coordinated intervention from major central banks. Last Wednesday, the dollar hit a 40-year high of 162.83 against the yen. It is currently trading at 161.76. Nizad stated, "The strong fundamentals of the Japanese economy do not support the yen falling to such low levels." He pointed out that without intervention, the dollar-yen exchange rate could rise to 170 within three months. This would enhance the competitiveness of Japanese industries, something the Trump administration in the US "cannot accept." Therefore, Nizad expects the Bank of Japan, the Federal Reserve, and the European Central Bank to take coordinated foreign exchange intervention actions in the second half of this year. Without international coordination, any appreciation of the yen is likely to be short-lived. He stated that if intervention successfully pushes the dollar-yen exchange rate down to around 155, then the previous 40-year high approaching 163 should be considered the peak.
