At a July 8 briefing, the Taiwan Affairs Office commented on reports that TSMC will inject $20bn into its U.S. unit to build a 12‑inch wafer fab and an advanced packaging plant. The office noted this is the sixth approval by Taiwan economic authorities for TSMC's U.S. investments, bringing cumulative approval investment to $44bn, and said the move has heightened island concern that TSMC could become an "American TSMC." Spokesperson Chen Binhua accused the DPP of treating TSMC's U.S. investment as a token of alignment with the U.S., abandoning Taiwan's industrial base and sacrificing industrial interests to secure U.S. support, and warned the further this course continues the more public worries will be realized.
