Bank of Japan policy board member Ayano Sato said firms are increasingly passing higher costs to consumers and the BOJ must guard against potential inflationary effects from yen depreciation. She said monetary policy should focus on inflation while fiscal policy should support households and firms hit by rising prices. Appointed by dovish Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Sato declined to comment on the timing or pace of further rate hikes and said the BOJ must watch both downside growth risks and upside inflation risks.

On June 29 US permanent representative to NATO Whitaker said the US has received more than $6 bln through the US- and NATO-proposed "Ukraine Priority Needs List" mechanism and plans to continue advancing it. The mechanism, funded by non-US NATO members, buys or transfers existing US weapons for rapid delivery of large volumes to Ukraine and, according to US officials, lets willing NATO donors bypass lengthy US arms-sale procedures to speed procurement. Russia has said Western arms shipments impede repeatedly a peaceful resolution and warning weapons sent to Ukraine would be lawful targets for Russian forces.
