People familiar with the matter say Apple, currently on M5, plans a base M6 for
entry-level Macs as early as this year but will skip a high-end M6. Apple
intends to ship Pro and Max versions in a next-generation M7 family in 2027 with
greater compute and graphics performance. The change is aimed at accelerating
technologies slated for later release to meet rising demand for on-device AI
features and graphics-intensive software.
