Two earthquakes above magnitude 7 struck northern Venezuela within a minute on
the evening of June 24 local time (morning of June 25 Beijing). The USGS placed
the epicenter about 160 km west of Caracas at a depth of 10 km. Buildings in
Caracas were damaged; casualty figures are unknown. The quakes occurred on a
public holiday while many people were at home. Venezuela's acting president
Rodríguez will address the nation. The USGS warned the twin quakes could cause
"large numbers of casualties and widespread damage."
