Germany’s defense minister Boris Pistorius said President Trump bears
responsibility for the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, adding that “ultimately
the plug in this bottleneck was pushed in by Trump, not us, but we have an
interest in pulling it back out.” He said Iran had earlier agreed under a
preliminary deal signed by Trump and Iranian president Pezeshkian to reopen the
waterway and shipping flows had begun to resume, but Iran said it on Saturday
had closed the route citing Israeli strikes in Lebanon. Pistorius said keeping
the Strait open, or ensuring safe passage, is in Europe’s energy-security and
economic-recovery interest.
