The Observer reports Prime Minister Starmer is preparing a timetable to step
down and could announce his resignation as early as next Monday. The paper says
the incoming MP from a Greater Manchester by-election will be sworn in next
Monday and that backers claim the newcomer has secured support from more than
201 Labor MPs to trigger a leadership challenge if Starmer does not
resign—exceeding half of the parliamentary Labor party and which, they argue,
would leave Starmer unable to demonstrate confidence in the House of Commons.
Senior Labor figures told the paper Starmer has concluded, after discussions
with cabinet ministers, Downing Street advisers, union leaders and party donors,
that his hold on power is no longer secure. Party insiders say he may make a
clear statement on Monday; a Labor peer close to Starmer said he appears to
have accepted resignation as the remaining option.
