The Bank of Japan said Friday Governor Ueda Kazuo has been discharged and plans to return to work on Tuesday the 23rd. He will continue to perform official duties while receiving outpatient treatment over the next two weeks. Ueda, 74, was hospitalized on June 9 for a liver cyst infection and missed this week’s policy meeting. During his absence the Policy Board raised the BOJ’s benchmark rate to 1%, the highest since 1995, extending the policy normalization that began in March 2024 when the bank ended its negative-rate regime.
